Health insurance company denies claim for hippo, animal coverage

A health insurance company says it’s denying a claim for an animal insurance policy that was offered for an injured hippo in Missouri.
The policy was offered by Biosurance and is for an 18-year-old male hippo who lost his leg on a motorcycle accident.
Biosurce says the hippo was offered coverage under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and that’s why it was denied a claim by the policyholder.
The policyholder did not respond to a request for comment on the incident.
The Hippo Assurance Agency says the incident happened on August 9.
They say it was a personal injury claim, but they can’t provide details because of HIPAA.
The agency says it has not yet filed a complaint.
The Associated Press reached out to Biosurec for comment and will update if we hear back.
